Fundamentals of the theatre arts

FUNDAMENTALS OF THE THEATRE ARTS

LENGTH: 1 year; grades 7, 8.

Students must have, and maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to be eligible for the required live performances. The Fundamentals of Theatre Arts is a course for students who have little or no background in the Theatre Arts with an emphasis on public speaking, technical theatre fundamentals, and performance pedagogy. This class is designed to emphasize the development of introductory skills to create confidence and community by developing a well rounded education using the collaborative skills of the Theatre Arts. Students will have opportunities to perform on stage, participate in theatre competitions, and complete developmental activities and projects.  Registration priority will be given to students who have not yet taken the course. 

Drama I

INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE ARTS (DRAMA 1) 

LENGTH: 1 year; grades 9, 10,11,12. 

A beginning class for the student who has had little or no background training in the Theatre Arts. This class emphasizes performance skills, technical theatre, and performance appreciation. Drama I focusses on developing introductory skills in Theatre Arts and Technical Theatre to allow for a lifetime appreciation and baseline education for work in the entertainment industry. Students will have an opportunity to perform if they are able to develop the discipline needed to appear on stage. Students must see a minimum of one live performance outside of school performances and write critiques of outside work. 

DRAMA II 

INTERMEDIATE THEATRE ARTS (DRAMA II)

LENGTH: 1 year; grades 10, 11 ,12.

PREREQUISITE: Drama I, or by audition with instructor consent. Drama II is an intermediate level class for motivated and committed students who have one year or more of training in the Theatre ARts. This class provides an in-depth creative experience through the exploration of various forms of theatre, technical theatre, and performance pedagogy. Students are given the opportunity to extend their skills and education while  gaining an academic comprehension of the historical, social, emotional and personal context of this discipline. 

Students will be given the opportunity to participate in theatre competition and performance that will be offered locally two or more times per academic year. 

TECHNICAL THEATRE/ADVANCED ACTING


Technical Theatre/Advanced Acting (Technical Theatre)

LENGTH: 1 year, grades 9-12. 

PREREQUISITE: Fundamentals of Theatre Arts, Drama I, or by audition with instructor consent. Technical Theatre/Advanced Acting is a course for motivated and committed students who are interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts or merging their interest in theatre with their chosen career. This class provides advanced opportunities to understand the Technical Theatre disciplines using projects to demonstrate student understanding. Students are also given advanced acting opportunities to extend their interest from previous courses taken in Nordhoff Theatre Arts. Students are given multiple performance and competition opportunities during the academic year.
